* While Florida does not require witnesses for the signing of the marriage license, you may still elect to have two witnesses present during the signing. This is totally optional! In other states, it’s different. Please note that while we are more than happy to accommodate this component, SJCE does not provide them. If you are looking to have witness signatures, you must have two of your guests provide this service for you.
We’re sure they will! After all, it’s your special day!
Information on Obtaining A Marriage License
(Information should be current as of 11/24 but subject to change. Verify with your local Clerk of Courts prior to paying any fees.)
1. Visit the Clerk of Court’s Office
- Go to the Clerk of Court in any Florida county. Both you and your partner must appear in person.
- You don’t have to apply in the county where you plan to marry; the license is valid statewide. But if you reside in one of the following counties, here are the links to speed up the process!
2. Bring Proper Identification
- Both parties must present valid and unexpired government-issued photo ID (e.g., driver’s license, state ID, passport).
- Social Security numbers are required but not the actual card. If you’re not a U.S. citizen, provide an alien registration number or a passport.
3. Pay the Fee
- The fee is typically $86.00. Florida residents can receive a discount (reduced to $61 with proof of completing a state-approved premarital preparation course).
4. Complete the Application
- Provide personal information, such as your full names, dates of birth, and addresses.
- If either party has been married before, you’ll need to disclose the date the last marriage ended (divorce or death). Proof is not required unless the divorce was finalized in the past 30 days.
5. Complete the Waiting Period (If Applicable)
- Florida residents must wait 3 days before the license is valid unless they’ve completed a premarital preparation course. Non-residents do not have a waiting period.
6. Use the License
- The marriage license is valid for 60 days from the date of issuance.
- The ceremony must be performed by an authorized officiant or minister (like us!) within this period, and the completed license must be returned to the Clerk of Court within 10 days for recording.
- That’s it!
